Locations

Our ideal location for the opening of our film would be a very basic hotel room with a minimalistic style and nothing to luxurious, although if this is not a possibility we would like to go to the opposite end of the spectrum and have a very luxurious hotel.
For our ideal location we are hoping to use the townhouse hotel in Wymondham town centre, it a pretty box standard hotel, with no real luxuries, but enough for someone to be comfortable and we want our character to seem like he is seeking no real luxuries and trying to lay low and avoid a lavish lifestyle. Also our character is to be very well dressed and we want him to contrast his environment a lot to make it seem as if he does not belong there which should hopefully make the audience begin to question why he is there in the first place which generates curiosity and a desire to watch the rest of the film. The suite is pictured below;

Failing that we would try to use a hotel room at Park Farm hotel, which is a very upper class and well furnished hotel, so our character would fit in well and we could generate a 'almost too perfect' kind of atmosphere around the scene to have the mood suddenly change to be much more sinister which would put the audience on edge and hopefully focus them on the film and wonder what has generated this shift in atmosphere.

Target audience

Our target audience consists of mostly males from the age of 15 up to around 55. Our film is an action/thriller and so is mainly aimed at males due to the violence that is typical with this genre that may put off female viewers. We conducted a survey containing twenty males and females who were all members of the sixth form and found that seven out of twenty females would watch an action film by themselves and eighteen out of twenty males would watch an action film by themselves.
Generally we are aiming for younger males as they are typically the most interested in this genre of film, they are most likely to watch this kind of film at the cinema but also just watch it at home when they are bored and hopefully this film will be able to draw them in so they end up being completely engrossed.

Audience research

Today Michael and I started our audience research and we are aiming to gain the input of between 6-10 people within our target audience which is 15 years and up and mainly male. We are recording these interviews and will upload an edited video containing the general consensus when we have completed our research.
The questions that we used are;
  1. What do you expect to see in a film opening?
  2. What openings have particularly stood out in films you have seen?
  3. What are the conventions of the action/thriller genre?
  4. What would you expect to see in the opening two minutes of an action thriller genre?
  5. What do you think of our idea?
  6. Would our opening sequence make you want to watch the rest of the film?

Character/actor profile (coursework practise)

Character profile:

Jack is an ordinary 17 year old boy apart from the fact he cannot say words that begin with vowels, can’t write vowels and even struggles to use words with vowels in them. He lives alone with his father, Mr. Goff. The believed caused of jack’s condition was a significant amount of pressure put on him to learn to talk at an early age from his mother and there is rumours about an incident involving over exposure to the television show ‘Countdown’.

Actor profile:

Name: Jonathan Briggs

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Role: Jack Goff (lead role)

Previous experience: Acting in other media student’s media projects more than a few times and no other prior experience.
Why we chose him: Jonny is a person of a naturally awkward and nervous disposition which reflects the character well and really helps in portraying the character Jack and his difficulty speaking. We also wanted someone who would fit the age well, which Jonny does, as well as being a full time sixth form student and being in appropriate costume at all times within school, this made Jonny an obvious choice for this role. While we did consider other actors such as Rory Pratt who have had more experience, time and convenience dictated that we use Jonny as well as the role being more suited to someone like him as opposed to a more confident actor and we used this to our advantage.

Character Profile: Jack's friend

Lauren has been friends with Jack since they were eight, they have been together since primary school and their families have become quite close.

Ever since Jack developed this disorder Lauren had been one of the few that stuck by him. They’re both in the same year group and most classes together, so their support towards each other is great. Lauren is achieving average grades, she’s popular among her peers and is very likable, she’s never tried to be something she’s not and has been incredibly understanding of Jacks case. Lauren believes everyone has the potential to be successful and believes Jack is no different.

Actor Profile:

Name: Kerry Hardesty

Gender: female

Age: 17
Why?: Kerry is a bubbly and confident person who fits the role well. Has fairly good acting skills and can improvise when needed.
